Following our recent Connect event in Sydney, we caught up with the lovely Tameka Moffat, an iscd alumni who is now running her own successful design studio in Sydney. Tameka shared her top 3 tips for running a successful design business and talked to us about her highlights in the industry since graduating!
Tameka first studied with us back in 2013 completing the Certificate IV in Design and then went on to study the Interior Design Diploma in 2014. Tameka’s passions for interiors design came from her family who had a construction business. Her experience in the design industry goes back 25 years when she started her first job working for Beechwood Homes.
“I have always worked in the industry, I went to iscd to upskill and gain the Interior Design Diploma Qualification. The design industry is constantly evolving so it’s important to keep learning and updating your skills. I researched many places to study but it was the school’s reputation and variety of courses available that drew me to study at iscd.”
Tameka’s design studio has won awards including;
- Awarded Finalist IWIB – Business Women of the Year – 2019
- Awarded Finalist IWIB – Best Home Based Business – 2019
The stunning Headlands Hotel project, which Tameka says is her highlight since graduating iscd, won AHA Best Hotel (Country) & Best Deluxe Accommodation for past 2 years 2017 & 2018.
Tameka was the executive design for the project which consisted of; 61 Serviced Hotel Apartments, Office Spaces and Reception, Lobby Areas, two restaurants, four bar areas, two function rooms, gaming rooms and a resort pool.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Everyday is different for me! Each day can vary from design, concepts, space planning, site meetings, client meetings and office admin. I start my day at 5am with office work – I found that this is when I’m most focused and have the least distractions!
“The best thing I have learnt since being out in the industry and running my own design studio is always be authentic, stay true to yourself and your design style!”
Tameka’s top tips for running a successful business…
“If you have a passion for design or already work in the industry and wish to upskill, definitely enrol in study. The design industry is constantly evolving so therefore it’s important to ensure you study with a quality and supportive provider in design education such as iscd.”
