We caught up with our Colour educator, Melanie Abbott to get her thoughts on this years Pantone’s colour of the year…

With Pantone’s much anticipated announcement last week that ‘Classic Blue’ is their Colour of the Year for 2020, the majority of designers and bloggers around the world are excited by the selection of a dependable colour in these times of uncertainty and unease.

As its name implies, ‘Classic Blue’ was noted by Pantone as “a timeless and enduring hue elegant in its simplicity and representing stability in a time of uncertainty”.

“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 ‘Classic Blue’, a solid and dependable hue we can always rely on,” said Leatrice Eisman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute.

Colour psychology tells us that blue is restful and suggests a calmness, it provides clarity and assists us in concentration. Blue is often seen to represent trust, stability and reliability.

Personally, I love a strong blue. I have a blue front door on a white exterior and I have also painted a room in a dark blue. Many people are scared to use a dark colour in their interiors but I say go for it. When I painted our childrens’ living room dark blue everyone in the family gravitated to it. It’s a great room in the winter and also in the summer. I always tell my clients to embrace the bold and choose a colour that makes you smile when you see it. Friends and family may have (and share!) their opinions but you are the one coming home to it so if it makes you happy, run with it. It’s only paint after all!

Incorporating ‘Classic Blue’ into interiors shows colour confidence. This blue can be enjoyed in so many textures and finishes – paint, wallpaper, fabric, tiles for example – and will provide a beautiful and enduring base for many colour combinations. How will you incorporate Classic Blue into your home or next project?
