Sydney Design 2010
Sydney Design will host one if its most dynamic programs in 14 years with a city-wide program of more than 70 events and activities supported by an engaging theme ‘tell us a story'.
This contemporary design festival runs for 16 days from Saturday 31 July to Sunday 15 August. The program has been produced by the Powerhouse Museum in partnership with more than 50 cultural institutions, organisations and individuals across Sydney.
The ‘tell us a story' theme will reveal the many captivating stories behind design ideas, objects and processes. It will invite participants to create meaningful conversations with others around design, and enable people to connect with design on a more personal level.
Student Design Challenge - A Workshop with Industry Practitioners
In these hands-on workshops students have the opportunity to work alongside professional designers Kristian Aus and Adam Goodrum as they research, generate ideas and create a prototype for a chair inspired by the Museum's design collection.
Kristian and Adam will provide students with industry insights into their design practice alongside demonstrations of techniques and material manipulation. The workshop will conclude a showcase of the final designs in a group critique which includes a stress test on their solution.
Students work collaboratively in response to the design brief which has one unique design parameter - the chair is not allowed to have four legs!

When she's not designing homes and styling mantel pieces, Megan travels the world to source beautiful things for her decorating business HOME. Megan writes not only as a design professional, but also someone who shares her home with three children, a husband and a schnauzer.
iscd is very honoured to have Megan opening the exhibitions this coming July, with over 200 First and Second Year Graduates attending. iscd Graduate Kelly Ross @ 2010 HIA Home Show Sydney
This years HIA Sydney Home Show on now, showcases a series of rooms being styled by key industry persons under the theme "International". One of these people is the International School of Colour and Design's Graduate and Drawing & Rendering short course Educator, Kelly Ross.
The select few were asked to choose and submit reasoning behind their choice of international city to support their design for an interior to be put on display at the Show. Kelly chose Berlin, Germany and this is why...
Berlin...
"Eclectic and unique, Berlin is home to a bustling international community and cutting edge art scene. With its tumultuous history and clash in ideas this city has helped define the modern world. On the streets of Berlin many philosophical, scientific and political ideas were born. As a divided city it became a symbol of both liberty and oppression, a state of mind, everyone's city. All free men wherever they live are citizens of Berlin".
Then came the journey of sourcing, designing, approaching, drawing, redrawing and scratching beneath the surface of Kelly's little knowledge of the influential city, she gave her self a challenge.
"In designing the room the foremost challenge/consideration and perhaps point of the exhibition was to produce awareness. Approaching suppliers is the only way forward to realising the space you want to manifest with NO budget!"
Kelly found this chair on the side of the road in Maroubra, Sydney and imagined it in Violet velvet. Not having the money to reupholster it she thought about her options. She had been aware of manufacturer EDIT doing unusual pieces so sent a photo of the chair and approached them to reupholster it. The end result a kitch Violet/Floral recovering.
Kelly's realisation meant that all elements in the room had to have 1 or 2 fall back positions. She mentioned good relations needed to be established and kept with suppliers so they didn't renegotiate on offers made in the spur of the moment, hungry for advertising and latter review it all as inconvenient. Advertising is an essential part of negotiating product from suppliers when using their products.
Wanting a very euro driven look and some unusual pieces made it easy for Kelly in many senses, yet in other respects very hard too. Make the decision yourself by attending the show from Thursday 13th - Sunday 16th May at Sydney's Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.

WE LOVE :: 'From The Land' new Cloth Fabrics wallpaper collections for Porters Paints
Last month lucky iscd Team Members Prue, Luke and Elodie went along to the launch of 'From the Land' at the National Art Gallery of NSW. 'From the Land' features Julie Paterson, the designer from Cloth Fabrics collaborating with one of Australia's leading brands, Porter's Paints, to create a new range of bold geometric wallpapers in earthy, natural colours. Cloth's collection will join other prestigious designers, Catherine Martin, Bowie and Bholu in the wallpaper design series "Designers for Porter's Paints".
Paterson has developed six designs from her current range of fabrics, representing a body of work that spans the past 14 years, inspired by the Australian landscape. She says "I always design for longevity. Each design has a story to tell and a reason for being in existence. I am interested in everyday experiences that might define, in a small way, how is it to live in this country at this moment, in simple and direct ways."
The designs, Scratchy, Looking For Water, Abstract, Stoney, Boardwalk and Spotcheck all refer in their own way to Paterson's ongoing fascination with the Australian landscape, both urban and rural. The colours are restrained; the motifs are simple and pared back, allowing the wallpapers to hang in harmony with cloth's range, adding a fresh and natural mix to the growing collection of wallpapers available at Porter's Paints.

iscd @ DesignEX 2010
Last week saw the International School of Colour and Design participate in Design Ex 2010 at the Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour. Working behind the scenes to present a fresh and decorative image of the school, for the forever growing design industry to see.
As one of the largest forums for all industries of design to come together, iscd presented it's stand hosted by current students and administration team members alike, offering the most current and inspiring information from all perspectives of the school that is iscd, Your Design Hub.
Along with the inspiring stand, iscd Founding Director Prue Royle demystified the creative process through her Thursday presentation "Whats Creativity got to do with it?"
On Friday both Prue Royle and iscd Colour Design Educator Edwina Hirst hosted the 'Gain the Creative Edge' workshop shining the spotlight on the importance of creativity and authenticity in design, teaching the attendees unique techniques on how to reclaim it.
Saturday saw Prue Royle presenting her "Above and Beyond the Trends" seminar, taking a look at the massive shifts in the world of design and what it means for us as designers as we enter the turbulent teens.

iscd presents the DIA NSW Colour Award @ GOTYA Evening
Last week saw the Design Institute of Australia's GOTYA presented across the NSW student design community.The Graduate of the Year Awards is an initiative of the NSW branch of the DIA to reward and recognise talent in 5 of the professional spheres that the DIA encompasses; it is open to any student enrolled in a recognised degree or diploma course in their final year of study at a participating NSW/ACT educational institution and the students submit a cross section of their projects from their final year.
All nominated students (including iscd's Dual Diploma Graduate Catherine Morgan, pictured above), their families, friends and participating colleges were invited to attend the presentation function which was held this month.
The GOTYA programme started in 2004 with 3 award categories. In 2006 the number of categories was increased to 5 with the addition of textiles and graphics. the past three years have seen even more special awards being added - ‘Overall Winner Award', ‘Best Colour Award' and the 'DIAS (Student Council of the NSW Branch) Award'

Congratulations to Catherine Morgan on her nomination for DIA NSW/ACT 2009 Graduate of the Year Awards
This year the International School of Colour and Design is proud to introduce Graduate Catherine Morgan as being nominated in the top 3 for Graduate of the Year Award (GOTYA) through the DIA.

LIMITED EDITION RUGS CREATED BY INTERIOR DESIGN PROFESSIONALS. EVOLVE: A design competition open to interior design professionals
Designer Rugs are proud to announce the inaugural EVOLVE AWARDS - the six winning rugs will form part of Designer Rugs ID COLLECTION 2010 / 2011, with winners sharing more than $20,000 in prizes - including a Trip to Milan's Salone de Mobile 2011!
To be eligible entrants must be an Australian or New Zealand architect, interior designer or interior design industry professional - including those working full time as an interior stylist, product designer, or textile designer or working in the interior design sector, such as colour consultants.
EVOLVE will continue as an annual fixture on the design calendar. The selected six rugs, each limited to an edition of 30, will join Designer Rugs ID COLLECTION, on sale from October 2010.
Designer Rugs is acknowledged as the Australian company for handmade, custom-made rugs and carpets. Working closely with Australia's top designers, architects and artists for over 23 years, as well as collaborating with leading creatives including Akira Isogawa, Dinosaur Designs, Catherine Martin and indigenous artist Minnie Pwerle.
From August 2010; designs by the Top 25 finalists can be viewed online, Open to the public, the PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD can be voted at www.designerrugs.com.au. EVOLVE WORKSHOPS
All you need to know about custom rug design!
Hand-made contemporary rug and carpet design entails much more than transposing a two-dimensional graphic onto the designated carpet surface! Exploring the design and construction process of custom rug and carpet construction, the EVOLVE Workshops will be held in most capital cities, aimed to equip design professionals with technical knowledge and provide advanced specification details to facilitate the design process. Workshops will be web streamed via the Designer Rugs website for those unable to attend.
