Sydney Design 2010

Sydney Design will host one if its most dynamic programs in 14 years with a city-wide program of more than 70 events and activities supported by an engaging theme ‘tell us a story'.

This contemporary design festival runs for 16 days from Saturday 31 July to Sunday 15 August. The program has been produced by the Powerhouse Museum in partnership with more than 50 cultural institutions, organisations and individuals across Sydney.

The ‘tell us a story' theme will reveal the many captivating stories behind design ideas, objects and processes. It will invite participants to create meaningful conversations with others around design, and enable people to connect with design on a more personal level.

Student Design Challenge - A Workshop with Industry Practitioners

In these hands-on workshops students have the opportunity to work alongside professional designers Kristian Aus and Adam Goodrum as they research, generate ideas and create a prototype for a chair inspired by the Museum's design collection.

Kristian and Adam will provide students with industry insights into their design practice alongside demonstrations of techniques and material manipulation. The workshop will conclude a showcase of the final designs in a group critique which includes a stress test on their solution.

Students work collaboratively in response to the design brief which has one unique design parameter - the chair is not allowed to have four legs!

A Day in the Life :: iscd Distance Education Workshop July 2010

Last Tuesday and Wednesday iscd hosted its mid year Distance Education workshop. Students both new and experienced came together to collaborate and stimulate their creative minds.

Beginning their first day with a personally guided tour of the inspiring Ripe Exhibition currently on show, and had the opportunity to play with professional presentation skills with Education Manager, Nikki Donald.

Along with meeting new friends along the way, each student reflected on what they had taken away from the two days both on a personal, as well as an educational level. Each sharing one common passion... colour and design.

On the Wednesay morning, those lucky enough had a group exploration of the creative hub that is Dank Street, Waterloo.

In true spirit of the 14th July (French Bastille) all involved ended the day with a yummy pastry and hot chocolate at the French Bakery House, Waterloo.

A great success on all accounts, thoroughly enjoyed by everybody. For iscd Distance Education students looking to join the next workshop later in 2010, contact the campus to enquire.

iscd Distance Education Students win Industry Awards for Mid Year 2010

The International School of Colour Design's Distance Education Students for Mid Year 2010 have collectively won 4 industry prizes as part of the schools Foundation Course.

Jillian Grochowski of Mentone, VIC has been awarded the Fred Hoskings Commercial Brief Highly Commended Award for her Christmas card design.

Brook Gossen of Tarragindi, QLD has been awarded a Designer Rugs Highly Commended Award for her design 'Grand Doilies'.

Naree Partridge of South Yarra, VIC has been awarded a Designer Rugs Highly Commended Award for her design 'Retro Daisy'.

Audra Ibbetson of Surrey Hills, VIC has been awarded a Designer Rugs Highly Commended Award for her design 'Industry'.

A long collaboration with Designer Rugs and Fred Hoskings has allowed iscd students to work on actual design industry briefs, and if successful see their award wining designs come to life. Congratulations to all winning entries, which will be on display at the North Sydney campus until 30 July 2010.

iscd Student Graduation Evenings :: RIPE

Every July and December the International School of Colour and Design is proud to celebrate it's students latest accomplishments.

Two hundred graduates from the Foundation and Diploma courses put their hard work on show through the Ripe Exhibition. iscd has watched its students transform from timid first timers who potentially hadn't picked up a paint brush since high school, into confident colourists and designers.

The excited chatter from studio sessions, the infectious buzz from in and out the campus doors as final works are submitted. Making life long friends whilst travelling on their creative journey, the iscd 2010 Mid Year Graduates will be greatly missed around the campus.

Some taking a brave leap into their new careers in the creative industry, others filled to the brim with creative inspiration and fulfilment. Come celebrate, share & experience the excitement this July as the RIPE Student Exhibition continues from 7 to 30 July, 2010.

130 CHAIR for Thonet

Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa has designed the new '130 chair' series for Thonet, drawing not on the form, but the attitude behind the classic bentwood chairs of the company. The '130' series are solid-wood chairs and armchairs that are available in plain wood - either in beech or oak - and are available with padded seats, or with fully upholstered seats and backrests.

CRASH CHAIR for Established & Sons

Designed by Konstantin Grcic, The Crash Chair is unlike typical upholstered furniture which is built on a wooden frame with foam padding. It consists of a tubular frame and a two-inch loose foam moulded cover to fit over the metal frame. The generous dimensions and spaciousness of the chair is to give individuals a place to ‘crash out' and relax.

JUMPER CHAIR for Established & Sons

This is a fun and playful chair reminiscent of a cozy woolen jumper. It's made from knitted wool, wrapped around a wooden structure with steel legs and fixed together with buttons.

MESH CHAIR for Magis

British designer Tom Dixon's new 'Mesh' chair for Italian furniture manufacturer Magis is made from two tooling processes: the pressing of metal mesh for the seat, and aluminum extrusion for the frame. 'Mesh' aspires to be almost invisible, with its semi-transparent structure. Its visual lightness and delicate curves make it a seat ideal for both the domestic and professional environment.

PAPER PLANES CHAIR for Moroso

London-based studio Doshi Levien (Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien) has designed 'Paper Planes' for Italian furniture manufacturer, Moroso. The seat features a steel structure, with cold-cured polyurethane foam upholstery. The cover comes in two versions: a printed kvadrat remix fabric with swarovski crystal applications or jacquard.

MAGIC HOLE CHAIR for Mocoloco

Phillipe Starck has used the most advanced materials to make the latest collection. He has crafted this classy furniture from shock resistant and weather proof materials. The bright orange ‘Magic Hole' on each unit will definitely add a unique touch as well as exclusiveness to your decor. It does make a rather dramatic statement that would be hard to imitate.

MASTERS CHAIR for Kartell

With lively sinuous lines, the' Masters' chair combines the outlines of three of the most famous chairs in modern design. Arne Jacobsen's Series 7 Chair, Eero Saarinen's Tulip Armchair, and Charles Eames' Eiffel Chair.

SPUN CHAIR for Haunch of Venison

British designer Thomas Heatherwick launched a chair shaped like a spinning top made of spun steel and copper. Developed through full size test pieces an ergonomic was established where seat, back and arms were all the same profile. The result is not immediately apparent as a chair and when upright looks more like a sculptural vessel. However, when lent on its side it forms a comfortable and functional chair that the sitter can rock from side to side in, or even spin round in a complete circle.

NAP CHAIR for Republic of Fritz Hansen

Award winning Danish designer Kasper Salto created the NAP chair which is all about being able to sit well in as many positions as possible. The name NAP is an abbreviation of the three key sitting positions; Normal, Active and Passive - because sitting is in fact a constant movement. Available in two varieties, with and without arm rests. All varieties come in four different colours: Milk White, Butter Yellow, Pepper Grey, Coffee Brown.

NEMO CHAIR for Fabio Novembre

Fabio Novembre uses furniture design to tell intense and fascinating stories in which the protagonist is often the human figure. This year he released 'Nemo'. Like a mask, it simultaneously conceals and reveals its inhabitant. Tall enough to protect the person, and designed to be used outside and inside alike, 'Nemo' has the power to turn any habitat into a theatrical scene and whoever uses it becomes the protagonist in a story!

WE LOVE :: TAC Headquarters in Victoria, Australia by MGS Architects

The TAC Headquarters successfully showcase the potential of collaborations between architects and artists.

And when MGS Architects received the 2009 Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Award for Commercial Architecture, it was precisely this element that the judges noted.

"The building's generous expression is skilfully articulated and the architects have successfully incorporated the work of artist Mathew Johnson into the building's façade."

Constructed in precast concrete, with aluminium panels shielding the western light, a mélange of green, blue and red panels on the western façade add a playful edge to the commercial headquarters.

"Mathew is known for his use of colour. His palette is always vibrant," says architect Chris Jones, a director at MGS Architects.

Located near Geelong's waterfront, Johnson's treatment of the prominent corner site draws employees, as well as locals, to the landmark building.

"We wanted to link the waterfront and Deakin University to the city, but we also wanted to design a building with urban design credentials," says Jones.

The urban design features of the TAC Headquarters are as impressive as the building. As well as the street-like ambience of the lobby, with its bluestone floors, the promenade is approached like a boardwalk, evocative of Geelong's waterfront.

Recycled timber was used, with aluminium panels set into the treads explaining the site's history.

"We were conscious of what was here before the bulldozers came in," says Jones, who laments the loss of the heritage wool stores.

"We can't bring them back. But we could try and create something that was going to occupy that vacuum."

Such inspiration for any iscd budding Interior Designers, don't be afraid to use interesting colour!

iscd Graduate Kelly Ross @ 2010 HIA Home Show Sydney

This years HIA Sydney Home Show on now, showcases a series of rooms being styled by key industry persons under the theme "International". One of these people is the International School of Colour and Design's Graduate and Drawing & Rendering short course Educator, Kelly Ross.

The select few were asked to choose and submit reasoning behind their choice of international city to support their design for an interior to be put on display at the Show. Kelly chose Berlin, Germany and this is why...

Berlin...
"Eclectic and unique, Berlin is home to a bustling international community and cutting edge art scene. With its tumultuous history and clash in ideas this city has helped define the modern world. On the streets of Berlin many philosophical, scientific and political ideas were born. As a divided city it became a symbol of both liberty and oppression, a state of mind, everyone's city. All free men wherever they live are citizens of Berlin".

Then came the journey of sourcing, designing, approaching, drawing, redrawing and scratching beneath the surface of Kelly's little knowledge of the influential city, she gave her self a challenge.

"In designing the room the foremost challenge/consideration and perhaps point of the exhibition was to produce awareness. Approaching suppliers is the only way forward to realising the space you want to manifest with NO budget!"

Kelly found this chair on the side of the road in Maroubra, Sydney and imagined it in Violet velvet. Not having the money to reupholster it she thought about her options. She had been aware of manufacturer EDIT doing unusual pieces so sent a photo of the chair and approached them to reupholster it. The end result a kitch Violet/Floral recovering.

Kelly's realisation meant that all elements in the room had to have 1 or 2 fall back positions. She mentioned good relations needed to be established and kept with suppliers so they didn't renegotiate on offers made in the spur of the moment, hungry for advertising and latter review it all as inconvenient. Advertising is an essential part of negotiating product from suppliers when using their products.

Wanting a very euro driven look and some unusual pieces made it easy for Kelly in many senses, yet in other respects very hard too. Make the decision yourself by attending the show from Thursday 13th - Sunday 16th May at Sydney's Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.

WE LOVE :: 'From The Land' new Cloth Fabrics wallpaper collections for Porters Paints

Last month lucky iscd Team Members Prue, Luke and Elodie went along to the launch of 'From the Land' at the National Art Gallery of NSW. 'From the Land' features Julie Paterson, the designer from Cloth Fabrics collaborating with one of Australia's leading brands, Porter's Paints, to create a new range of bold geometric wallpapers in earthy, natural colours. Cloth's collection will join other prestigious designers, Catherine Martin, Bowie and Bholu in the wallpaper design series "Designers for Porter's Paints".

Paterson has developed six designs from her current range of fabrics, representing a body of work that spans the past 14 years, inspired by the Australian landscape. She says "I always design for longevity. Each design has a story to tell and a reason for being in existence. I am interested in everyday experiences that might define, in a small way, how is it to live in this country at this moment, in simple and direct ways."

The designs, Scratchy, Looking For Water, Abstract, Stoney, Boardwalk and Spotcheck all refer in their own way to Paterson's ongoing fascination with the Australian landscape, both urban and rural. The colours are restrained; the motifs are simple and pared back, allowing the wallpapers to hang in harmony with cloth's range, adding a fresh and natural mix to the growing collection of wallpapers available at Porter's Paints.

Last week saw the International School of Colour and Design participate in Design Ex 2010 at the Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour. Working behind the scenes to present a fresh and decorative image of the school, for the forever growing design industry to see.

As one of the largest forums for all industries of design to come together, iscd presented it's stand hosted by current students and administration team members alike, offering the most current and inspiring information from all perspectives of the school that is iscd, Your Design Hub.

Along with the inspiring stand, iscd Founding Director Prue Royle demystified the creative process through her Thursday presentation "Whats Creativity got to do with it?"

On Friday both Prue Royle and iscd Colour Design Educator Edwina Hirst hosted the 'Gain the Creative Edge' workshop shining the spotlight on the importance of creativity and authenticity in design, teaching the attendees unique techniques on how to reclaim it.

Saturday saw Prue Royle presenting her "Above and Beyond the Trends" seminar, taking a look at the massive shifts in the world of design and what it means for us as designers as we enter the turbulent teens.
