Australian International Furniture Fair 2012

The AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL FURNITURE FAIR and the co-located DECORATION + DESIGN fair returns to Sydney from 1 – 3 February 2012. Renowned for forecasting the trends of the coming year, the fair will unearth emerging designers and welcome global leaders in design and trends.

A sure highlight of the Fair, The Edge design & innovation showcase, will return for 2012. Acclaimed for revealing the latest talent in Australian furnishing design, awards are given in Student, Concept, Commercial and Green categories.

A third instalment of Design Futures will also feature at the fair. Curated by Decoration + Design’s resident Trend Forecaster Genty Marshall, the display will inspire visitors with a diverse range of furnishings from Australian and the world.

The 2012 AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL FURNITURE FAIR is the first buying fair on the Asia Pacific calendar. It will attract thousands of industry representatives including furniture and furnishings retailers, architects, interior decorators, designers and stylists.

Look Now, See Forever

Last December, in a surprisingly simple yet ridiculously amazing installation for the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, artist Yayoi Kusama constructed a large domestic environment, painting every wall, chair, table, piano, and household decoration a brilliant white, effectively serving as a giant white canvas.

Over the course of two weeks, the museum’s smallest visitors were given thousands upon thousands of coloured dot stickers and were invited to collaborate in the transformation of the space, turning the house into a vibrantly mottled explosion of colour.

The installation, entitled The Obliteration Room, is part of Kusama’s Look Now, See Forever exhibition that runs through March 12.

The iscd campus has been transferred into an amazing exhibition displaying the talents of our Foundation Course and Diploma graduates.

Twice a year the school presents Ripe, the students’ body of work for the public to enjoy. We have found that these exhibitions inspire current and prospective students to perceiver on their own creative journey and graduating students are able to showcase their work in an open to the public exhibition.

The exhibition will be on show until January 2012. If you cannot make it to the exhibition make sure you check our award winners gallery.

Tangerine Tango - Colour of 2012

The 2011 colour of the year, PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle, encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor. PANTONE 17-1463 Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.

Neon Clouds

Ink and water photography has never been so vibrant as that seen in the ‘Aqueous Fluoreau’ series. Even its predecessor, Aqueous, cannot touch the presence of its neon chromatic vibrancy. Comprised of 14 new underwater photographs, each image is as different as the next, despite the similar colors used throughout.

Created by photographer Mark Mawson, the Aqueous Fluoreau series has a sculptural aesthetic that gives it a tangible presence. From mushroom clouds to squid-like shapes, the forms created are ever changing and full of life. Relying purely on creation and imagination, the Aqueous Fluoreau series shows a range of possibility when it comes not only to photography, but to abstract art as well. Like Rorschach inkblots, this series also relies on interpretation.

The work of influential architects and designers from Australasia will be judged by an esteemed panel of design leaders, providing an inspirational showcase of colour in the built environment.

The judging panels boasts an impressive collective knowledge and experience in colour and design, with the line up including award winning architect, Peter Maddison, the talented colour guru at Colourways, Kim Chadwick, and the creative stylist and founder of Design Files, Lucy Feagins.

Award entries are now open and will run until the 10th February 2012 with projects being judged across eight categories:

World’s Best House

Small House in Sydney, Australia, designed by Domenic Alvaro, has won the ‘World’s Best House’ award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards 2011.

The building was selected by a panel of esteemed architects and designers, beating off competition from a shortlist of 18 entries.

The ultra-compact vertical house is located in an urban setting and features an outdoor room on the top floor. It was designed by Alvaro not only to be his own home, but also to test a development model for downtown urban living as an alternative to the ubiquitous luxury apartment.

By proposing a vertical house type on an apparently useless piece of left over land, Alvaro and his partner have demonstrated a replicable model. Already the adjacent plot has been acquired by another future resident who will follow this fine example.

The jury commended the project, saying: “Built on a difficult laneway site in Sydney, more than any other contender this project demonstrated commitment and excellence on many levels. From the concept right through to execution, employing construction techniques more typically used on large scale commercial projects in response to physical and budget constraints.”

The WAF Awards see unsung local buildings take on internationally acclaimed projects in what is the world’s biggest architecture contest. Unlike other architectural competitions, architects present their work in front of leading industry judges and a live public audience as they compete for the accolade of ‘World Building of the Year’.

National Workshops

Wow! What an action packed month we have had. It has been an absolute pleasure travelling around Australia for a series of dynamic, interactive and personal Workshops teaching people how to create the right colours, mood + style for their home and guiding them to become the creative person they have always wanted to be!

As the home of design education, it was rewarding to see over 150 people joining us for these workshops and open their eyes to the joy of colour and design.

We will be repeating these workshops throughout 2012 to ensure we offer distant education that doesn’t feel distant. We hope to see you in your hometown very soon!

Drawing inspiration from the everyday and the hundreds of photos he takes, each colour has a story and a reference from his adventures.

“I LOVE colour so have included some fun bursts of colour mixed with some cool neutrals,” he says.

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames were America's most influential and important industrial designers. Admired for their creations and fascinating as individuals, they have risen to iconic status in American culture.

'Eames: The Architect & The Painter' draws from a treasure trove of archival material, as well as new interviews with friends, colleague, and experts to capture the personal story of Charles and Ray while placing them firmly in the context of their fascinating times. Narrated by James Franco, Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first film dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.

Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life—from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age—has been less widely understood.

Filmmakers Jason Cohn & Bill Jersey tapped a never-before-seen "cache of archival material, visually-stunning films, love letters, photographs and artifacts" from over 40 years of work and collaboration to present "a definitive and unprecedented cinematic foray into the private world of Charles and Ray Eames' [studio]."

The Outpost Project

Outpost Project brings together the most celebrated local and international street artists for a vibrant festival that will transform Cockatoo Island. The Island's vast abandoned factories and intriguing forgotten alleyways are the perfect backdrop for projects showcasing the energy and diversity of Street Art.

“This will be the first time so many works by Banksy have ever been seen in Australia,” said Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Executive Director Geoff Bailey. “People are fascinated by Banksy’s art and by his identity, which has never been revealed. This is a private collection, showcasing an art movement that has become a global phenomenon.”

An impossible outcome, without the talent, commitment and energy of more than 150 artists, all willing to come on a journey with curators Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and aMBUSH Gallery, in a first for the Southern Hemisphere.

Thursday 13 October 2011 iscd presented ‘Design Live’ to a packed audience at the Museum of Sydney.

This inspiring evening took the audience behind the scenes of the dynamic design with Deborah Bibby (Editor- Real Living Magazine), Emma Elizabeth Coffey (Interior Stylist and Designer and Blogger), Julie Paterson (Founder + Designer - CLOTH Fabric) and Prue Royle (Founding Director – iscd) sharing the latest and greatest from the world of colour and design.

Emma Elizabeth Coffey presented her findings from the 2011 international design shows which she showcases on her Vlog.

Deborah Bibby Editor of Real Living magazine discussed how the journey of a magazine from conception to newsstand.

Julie Paterson shared her journey as a textile designer and the reality of running her textile business, Cloth.

Prue Royle’s presentation titled Inside Trend and took the audience on a fascinating journey into the world of trend forecasters and used this as a basis to showcase the latest colour directions.

Our students stunning stationery

We are constantly inspired by what our students do but this week the team at iscd were floored by the stunning stationery collections produced by our budding Graphic Designers.

The brief given to the students was to create a fashionable contemporary collection of complementary stationery products. The final products had to be in line with current trends and include minimum of 1 and maximum of 4 colours in each design.

We can’t get enough of these beautiful hand cut paper artworks by graduate Lisa Rodden.

A quiet style, strong and inviting, the works evoke emotions from clever simplicity. A poignant contrast to the mayhem of life they are a representation of the interconnectedness of all things.

Her work is a communication of how all things are interrelated, with organic forms, textures, colour and flow being her signature. This approach brings a richness and complexity to a multitude of styles.

Lisa does private commissions as well as exhibiting.

Saturday in Design

Saturday in Design is an annual trade event for the design community, which began in Sydney in 2003, and now alternates each year between Sydney and Melbourne.

It involves Australia’s premier designer furniture, finishes, fixtures and lighting showrooms opening their doors on a Saturday to allow architects, designers, students and design-savvy members of the public to enjoy the products they specify, in a showroom environment.

Saturday in Design has traditionally been an opportunity for local and international products from hundreds of reputable brands to be launched to thousands of members of the design community in 1 day.

To enable hassle-free travel in between showroom venues around the city, a number of complimentary shuttle buses run on pre-arranged routes for the entire day.

Sydney Design 2011

Sydney Design is an annual event produced by the Powerhouse Museum in association with more than 60 cultural institutions, organisations and individuals. With over 100 events, the program includes inspiring exhibitions, workshops, master classes, talks, installations and tours – unpacking design, connecting people and creating meaningful dialogue around design issues.

iscd loved Built: Is Old New Again? At the Artereal Gallery in Rozelle

(On from 3 August – 3 September, Wednesday to Saturday, 11am-5pm)

A traditional armchair is brought into the 21st century with allusions to the skyscrapers of New York City. Exhibiting artists and designers, Antonio Pio Saracino, Adam Goodrum, Kenan Wang and Anna Carey, reinterpret traditional furniture forms and aesthetics utilising contemporary technology and modelling techniques to realise objects in modern synthetic materials and formats. Their work draws on a number of cultural influences from social history, memory and traditional craftsmanship techniques to reinterpret modern architectural and design styles in a contemporaneous way.
