On Wednesday 31st March, Dulux hosted it's annual Colour Awards at the Guildford Lane Gallery in Melbourne, Victoria. The International School of Colour and Design was proud to have 10 graudates shortisted as finalists.

One of the finalists, Joyce Pang (pictured below) is a mother of two as well as an International School of Colour and Design (iscd) graduate. She is currently floating on cloud nine after winning the Dulux Colour Award for 2010. Joyce took out the student section of the international competition which was open to architecture and design students from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

Now in their 25th year, the awards have been one of the defining standards for reaching the pinnacle of the Australian design industry. "This is a truly outstanding achievement by Joyce. These awards are highly regarded throughout the international design world and I was extremely honoured to accept the award on her behalf" said Prue Royle, Founding Director of iscd.

A former investment banker with a creative heart, Joyce has always harboured a love for art, craft and design. After the birth her first child and reaching a cross road in her finance career with the onset of the global financial crisis, Joyce was looking for new inspiration and direction.

Joyce enquired with the International School of Colour and Design and knew this was the place that would unleash her creativity. Looking back at her time with the School Joyce reflects "studying at iscd was the best thing for me, not only did it give me the knowledge, it gave me all the support and ingredients to be creatively inspired". The education that Joyce received did more then make her happy, it was very industry focused too, giving her the confidence to enter the Dulux Colour Awards. It has paid off, winning her the student division award and launching her colourful career.
Joyce now feels part of the design industry and ready to take on the world, one painted wall at a time.

Congratulations to Joyce and all finalists on a very successful and inspiring evening down in Melbourne, a fantastic kick start to each of their creative careers in the colour world.

Last Monday and Thursday night saw the International School of Colour and Design host its first of a biannual seminar series, Behind Design. Students, Alumni, and Industry Partners alike, rubbed shoulders and enjoyed an inspiring evening, of tales from credited Colourists, Stylists and Designers.

With both evenings totally booking out within the first week of release, it was a full house each night. This didn't deter the speakers who executed their presentations with expertise and flair!

Vanessa Colyer Tay from InsideOUT Magazine, Margot Warre from Margot Warre Design, Edwina Hirst esteemed iscd Educator, Babette Hayes of Babette Hayes Designs and Tamara Maynes of Bespoke Workshop all brought different experiences and ideas to the table.

The March series deemed such a success, there is much hype about the next lot proposed for September 2010, to book your interest in advance or read more about the evenings just past, click here.

Olafur Eliasson is among the most influential and widely acclaimed artist of his generation.
From light-filled environments to walk-in kaleidoscopes, his unique participatory works offer alluring spaces that harness optical cognition and meteorological elements, examine the intersection of nature and science, and explore the boundary between the organic and the artificial.
Having been raised partly in Iceland, Eliasson's practice is informed by that country's primordial landscape and spectacular weather. He recontextualises elements such as light, water, ice, fog, arctic moss, and lava rock to create altogether new circumstances that shift the viewer's consciousness and sense of place. By extension, his work prompts an intensive engagement with the world outside and a fresh consideration of everyday life.
Born in Denmark in 1967 to Icelandic parents, Eliasson studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1995 he established Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin, a laboratory for spatial research. He has engaged in a number of projects in public space, and as professor at Universität der Künste in Berlin, founded the Institut für Raumexperimente in 2009.
He presently divides his time between his family's home in Copenhagen, his studio in Berlin, and periods of work in Iceland.

On Prue Royle's recent inspection tour to Vietnam and Cambodia, she observed that what she has described as "Indochine", incorporates the traditional country flavours of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos as well as the influence of the Chinese, French and other invading countries. Looking through history's time-line, many centuries of wars and movements of people and their cultures are the key contributors to this fascinating decorative fusion.

Never before has the 'East Meets West' decorating theme been so prevalent in the global design scene. Only this time, it has been viewed first hand from the East by Prue Royle, instead of from the West as in the past.
