Subject areas:

LESSON ONE: PERSONAL COLOUR: INTRODUCTION

Understanding your colour preferences. Developing your personal colour palette.

We start with a focus on developing personal colour palettes and collage design. This includes a fascinating exercise, exclusive to iscd, to determine your Core and Reject Colours. We then work with your Core Colour to produce an extended colour palette, which will be unique to you.

LESSON TWO: PERSONAL COLOUR: MOOD + COLOUR PALETTES

The emotional impact of colour. Creating colour mood palettes

Understanding emotional responses to colour enables you to develop specific moods with colour and tone. Our iSTYLE activities and questionnaires give you valuable insights into how important it is to establish the mood for your room before you start choosing your colours.

LESSON THREE: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOUR

Understanding the symbolic, historical and cultural nature of colour

Colour psychology is a fascinating subject and essential to our learning. Variations of a colour can have different psychological effects from person to person, so we explore different meanings of primary, secondary and neutral colours.

LESSON FOUR: COLOUR SCHEME DEVELOPMENT: STYLE + ROOM ANALYSIS

Colour palette development. Paint Sheen levels. Proportional colour

Learn to appreciate the importance of analysing room requirements and creating a style to match. This is fundamental to the decorating process, as good planning is essential to achieve the right look and mood. Paint sheen levels and proportional colour are essential in colour application, so we teach you how and where best to use them.

LESSON FIVE: CREATING THE MOOD: TONE + NEUTRAL COLOUR

Understanding tone. How to use tonal schemes to create mood and atmosphere

Extending the concept of mood and introducing tone, which is an essential ingredient in mood creation. Tone is one of the most important elements in decorating because the tonal scheme of an interior sets a very distinct mood and atmosphere for the space.

LESSON SIX: DISCOVERING TEXTURE: PATTERN, FABRIC + PAINT FINISHES

Adding personality to your décor. When and how to use texture

Explore both visual and tactile texture in decorating and begin to understand how to link texture and colour to style. By completing our sensory chart you’ll learn to appreciate how important the design element of texture is. Relating texture to different decorating styles is a must for the home decorator.

LESSON SEVEN: INSPIRATION: FROM NATURE

Exploring creative ways to develop colour and decorating schemes

Using colours from nature, particularly something from your own garden, allows you to create a unique palette, which will instantly work in your home. Extending this palette with texture will ensure a beautiful and unique colour scheme that is uniquely you.

LESSON EIGHT: CREATING YOUR OWN COLOUR STYLE BOARD

Applying your knowledge. Creating a colour scheme for a room in your home.

Consolidate all you have learnt and prepare to create an inspirational colour style board for a real decorating situation. Our step-by-step guidelines ensure you address each element for your décor scheme in a systematic manner. By combining your new skills and knowledge you’ll easily be able to link colour, texture, furniture, lighting, fabric and accessories to mood and style.
