Designer Rugs Industry Brief

My sprawling line design is inspired by the silhouette of a tree. Its form is so simple, yet its complex branches twist and flow out of one another, leading the eye from the strong, robust trunk to the contrasting fine, delicate twigs. It represents growth.

I used repetition, altered scale and overlapping techniques in my design as well as a strong colour palette.

The inspiration for my design came from the reflection of a light. It reminded me of honeycomb and the way your eye never rests when you look at it - you seem to travel through it and keep going.

My daughter had a play date with Ruby, a beautiful blonde 2 year old, where we worked our way through the alphabet and numbers. It was then that I saw for the first time the beauty of each of the numbers.

My inspiration was drawn from nostalgia – finding something with meaning and creating a fresh perspective. Society is becoming much more environmentally aware, and we are looking back to the simplicity of our past, to push forward.

Focusing on the continuing Asian trend I created a stylized chrysanthemum but in a monochromatic neutral palette of charcoal. The result is sophistication and elegance.

This design is a development from nature (a leaf) with an addition of two circles. It was then simplified and repeated in three different sizes, then printed and cut out many times and positioned on paper. The line flow is the key to this design.

I tend to like a structured straight line design with symmetry and balance. But yet, I wanted to create something that is beyond what the first glance sees. With Peeping Through I wanted to add an organic element to a design whilst maintaining structure.

I’ve always loved to look at abstract and geometric artworks and most of the paintings I create consist of these elements. The mixture of straight lines used against the contrast of the smooth flowing circles make this design a dramatic rug.
